Atari800 emulator was written by David Firth in 1995 and released under the GPL. So it was available with full source code in C. The code was written with portability in mind and that allowed various people to create ports of Atari800 for PC, Amiga, Atari, Mac and machines running UNIX-like operating systems.

As there were no new versions of Atari800 since spring of 1997 several people (Perry McFarlane, Rich Lawrence, Thomas Richter, Radek Sterba, Robert Golias and me) started updating the last available v0.8.0 source code independently. Later we all got in touch and started working together. I also contacted the original Atari800 author, David Firth, who basically agreed with me maintaining the source code and putting out source and binary releases.

Since then many new talented programmers joined the Atari800 development team and helped improving the emulator. For more information please see the Development page.

Note: Not all features are supported on all platforms.

• Atari 400, 800, 600 XL, 800XL, 130XE, 5200 Games System.
• 130XE compatible memory expansions: 320K, 576K, 1088K.
• Optional 4K RAM between 0xc000 and 0xcfff in 400/800 mode.
• Axlon and Mosaic memory expansions for the 400/800
• Cycle-exact 6502 emulation, all unofficial instructions.
• Cycle-exact NMI interrupts, scanline-based POKEY interrupts.
• Cycle-exact ANTIC and GTIA emulation, all display modes.
• Player/Missile Graphics, exact priority control and collision detection.
• Exact POKEY shift registers (sound and random number generator).
• 8 disk drives, emulated at computer-to-drive communication and fast patched SIO levels.
• ATR, XFD, DCM, ATR.GZ, XFD.GZ and .PRO disk images.
• Direct loading of Atari executable files and Atari BASIC programs.
• 43 cartridge types, raw and CART format.
• Cassette recorder, raw and CAS images.
• Printer support.
• Files can be stored directly on your host computer via the H: device.
• Current emulation state can be saved in a state file.
• Sound support on Unix using "/dev/dsp".
• Stereo (two POKEYs) emulation.
• Joystick controller using numeric keypad.
• Real joystick support.
• Paddles, Atari touch tablet, Koala pad, light pen, light gun, ST/Amiga mouse, Atari trak-ball, joystick and Atari 5200 analog controller emulated using mouse.
• R-Time 8 emulation using host computer clock.
• Atari palette read from a file or calculated basing on user-defined parameters.
• Screen snapshots (normal and interlaced) to PCX and PNG files.
• Sound output may be written to WAV files.
• User interface on all versions supporting bitmapped graphics.
• R: device (the Atari850 serial ports) mapped to net or real serial port.
• Recording input events to a file and playing them back
• MIO and Black Box emulation
• 1400XL and 1450XLD emulation

Compiling the Emulator

The emulator can be compiled for the following systems (and probably many others with a little work):-

1. X Window Version (including SUN OpenWindows) on a Unix Platform (prefer the SDL version)
2. CURSES version
3. Graphical Version for the Amiga (not maintained)
4. Graphical version for the Atari TT/Falcon and compatible computers
5. BASIC version (No Graphics). Should be straightforward to configure for any 32-bit environment supporting ANSI C.
6. VGA Version for DOS
7. DirectX Version for Microsoft Windows (also try the SDL version)
8. SDL (Linux/Unix, Windows, BeOS)
9. WinCE
10. Java (various platforms)

Darek Mihocka got the permission from Atari corp. to distribute the images of Atari 800XL's OS and BASIC ROMs. The XFormer 2.5 (now PC Xformer Classic 3.6) package that contains these ROM images is free now so download and unpack it to get the ROM files needed for Atari800 run.

Also note that there are many ports of Atari800 and we certainly haven't located them all. However, it is our goal to archive all the emulators we can find. If you have done another Atari800 port that is not listed here or know of one we don't have (or any other emulator for that matter) please contact us.

Atari800's source code can also be built for other platforms. If you can't find the code you need in the tarball, try the official CVS.

Finally, note that Atari800 for Windows CE and PocketAtari are the same emulator. This can be confusing for those that are new to Atari800 because the archive's name is atari800-x.x.x-wince.zip, but the documentation refers to the emulator as PocketAtari. The download is also available on both the Atari800 and PocketAtari homepages. We've left it off this page and made it available only on our PocketAtari page to prevent confusion
