JStella is a Java-based Atari 2600 VCS emulator. It allows one to play old Atari 2600 games in an operating system independent manner. It also supports web page based applets. Its emulation core is based on Stella-Atari 2600 Emulator.

JStella is an open-source Atari 2600 emulator that is programmed in Java, and thus can be played on most major operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc).

Currently, there are 2 different ways of running JStella.

  1. It can be directly from the JAR file.
  2. It can be run as a Java Applet on a web page.
- Taken from the JStella homepage and/or documentation
- Some excerpts edited for grammar, length, and clarity

As you can see below JStella is currently at version 0.95, however we could only find source code for version 0.75. If you have the source for the most current version or know where to find it, please contact us.

JStella brings all the quality of Stella into your favorite web browser! If you want to let people play Atari 2600 ROMs on your website, this is the perfect emulator for you, but nothing stops you from downloading it and using it to play games on your local machine either. It does require the ROM to be named "myROM.bin" though, so it may not be very practical. However, in the quite unlikely scenario that your operating system isn't supported by it's own Stella port, but it does have Java.... it may be a viable option. Speed and compatibility seem to be good, although not quite as good as the original Stella.
