I'd say the reason is likely that Dell provides them free of charge for advertising purposes, just a guess tho.

I will say this though, buying a rebuilt computer does have the advantage of a single warranty. If you build a computer you'll have a separate warranty for each part, which can be a pain. However, I'm sure if you took the same amount of money and built a custom computer you'd do better.

That really depends on your definition of "better"  The computer you built would probably have the same measurements, if not slightly less.  But the hardware itself would perform better because it was of a higher quality and you would know exactly what you were getting.  For example, Dell tells you that your getting 2GB of RAM.  But it doesn't tell you the speed or the brand.  I'd rather purchase RAM i know to be good, then whatever RAM Dell gets from the lowest bidder.  That's my personal opinion anyway.

Well i guess you do have a point there. buying your own RAM is probably more reliable than theirs.

Exactly.  Now apply that concept to every part of the computer. Cheesy

Always a plus.  Unless you do something stupid like jam a screwdriver through a motherboard.  I'm told that is much less fun.

Is that covered under warranty? "Warranty is good for 1 year or 1 screwdriver related stabbing"

Actually in the end it turns out that the screw got stuck under the motherboard. After it came out the MB worked again, but I had already put the HD and ram into a new one. I later used that MB to fix another computer.

I doubt it was covered, but I would have tried if it had still been under warranty.

You were on my computer too much anyway.  Cheesy

lol, I was never going to point out that you were the one that did it.  Way to tell on yourself.

And that mother board worked??  I was thinking there was actual damage to the board...I must have dreamed it.  But at least it didn't suffer the fate of my hardware modem...

I used that modem up until the very moment I took it back out and gave it to you. I have a theory about you foo-bar'n it during install and blaming me. Now your Transporter DVD, I'll have to take a mulligan on that one.
